Nearly 700 budding darts professionals will compete over eight days of action in a couple of weeks time in order to gain one of 29 Tour cards available to join the Pro Tour in the PDC system. From seasoned stars such as Kevin Painter and Wez Newton to youngsters like Jarred Cole and Lewy Williams, despite the ongoing pandemic, players will be travelling from as far as Canada and Australia to compete for their chance to make a dream come true.

Among these names is five-time World Champion, Raymond van Barneveld, who put his darts down following a shock round one loss to Darin Young at the Alexandra Palace just 13 months ago. The former Dutch favourite will now have to come through a stacked field to regain a place on the tour.

The 'Schools' are split into a UK school for those entering from England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, whilst European residents will head across to Germany for their attempt. Players outside these regions, such as North America, will have the choice.

Van Barneveld will have to squeeze through stage 1 off Q-School to have his chance to take two-year card, but despite the odds being stacked against him, will surely be one of the name in the mix!

Seven time Snooker World Champion Stephen Hendry could be set to make a sensational return to the sport.

The 51-year-old retired from the sport in 2012 after dominating throughout the 90’s and continuing his form into the early 2000’s, but after beginning to suffer more defeats than a multiple time World Champion is use to, hung up his jacket eight years ago.

However, after working with Steve Feeney recently Hendry has rediscovered his love of the game in a professional capacity.

Speaking to Ken Doherty on Instagram live, Hendry said: “I’ve been doing a wee bit with Steven Feeney and I’ve started to get a bit of pleasure from hitting the ball back,

“I’d done about half a dozen sessions with him and I was getting quite into it, then obviously this [coronavirus] has happened. Hopefully, Praise God if Sheffield is on, if he’s there, he’ll maybe give me a few hits.

“He asked me what I wanted from it in the beginning and I just said, I want to enjoy playing snooker, that’s all. The way I was playing, even in the Seniors. Not hitting the ball properly, it was just torture really, it’s the last throw of the dice.”

Feeney, the man behind the innovative SightRight training technique previously with Ronnie O’Sullivan and 2018 World Champion Mark Williams.

The Senior World Championship is planned for August, and that could be a potential route into the Champion of Champions event further down the line. Sheffield’s Crucible theatre is set to host the Senior Worlds following the rescheduled World Championship in mid August, whether that be in front of an audience of not.

Michael van Gerwen remains the heavy favourite for this year's Premier League title, having now been cut to 11/10 to claim his 7th Premier League crown. The world number two is unbeaten in three weeks of Premier League action, defeating Michael Smith in a repeat of the World Championship final last Thursday in Liverpool to keep his unbeaten streak in tact. Having won in Dublin, Exeter and Liverpool, the Green Machine will be looking to keep that run going in Nottingham this week.

With the top four qualifying for the play-offs at the 02 Arena in May, both Michael Smith and Gerwyn Price are handily placed and remain 3/1 and 5/1 respectively. The reigning world champion suffered a hand injury in a recent European tour event and may need to take time out in the near future in order for that to heal.

Peter Wright picked up his first points of the season in Liverpool last week, but having failed to find the form that has taken him to two World Championships, Snakebite is as long as 16/1 with some bookies. The Scot will certainly need an upturn in form if he is to reach the play offs.

The PDC World Championship is just six months away, so it's time to take a peak at the odds heading into darts' most prestigious event.

Last years champion, Gerwyn Price, doesn't currently sit at the top of the tree, that position falls to world number three Michael van Gerwen. The Dutchman is yet to win a title this year, but with a cluster of tournaments coming up, that is likely to change.

Price, who missed the Premier League due to positive Covid-19 test, has been mopping up the Pro Tours in 2021 but is yet to win a TV tournament himself.

Instead those honours have fallen to the likes of Jonny Clayton and Jose de Sousa, who find themselves 4th and 6th in the betting order.

Recent World Matchplay champion Peter Wright is placed third at around 11/2, whilst fellow former World Champions Gary Anderson and Rob Cross are both found at inflated prices.
